The History Of Rosebud

Missouri

Rosebud is a city located in Gasconade County, Missouri. It was founded in the late 1890s, when the Rock Island Railroad completed a stretch between Union and Herman, Missouri and constructed a train depot. The depot and the surrounding area were named "Rosebud" after a wild rosebush in full bloom near the depot. As of 2020, the city had a population of 390 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.

One of the first businesses in Rosebud was the Baur Hotel, which was opened in 1899 by Godfried Baur to accommodate the railroad crews and other newcomers coming to the area. In 1900, Albert Karstedt and A.F. Brinkman opened a general merchandise store that sold a wide variety of products, including groceries, seeds, tobacco, and patent drugs. In 1902, several other businesses opened in Rosebud, including a lumber yard, blacksmith shop, two general stores, a mill, café, a telephone office, saloon, bank, and garages.

Rosebud was officially incorporated as a town in 1911 and was upgraded to a city in 1947. In the mid-20th century, Rosebud began to shift from an industrial and agricultural economy to a more service-based economy. Many of the factories and mines in the area closed, and the city's economy became more reliant on small businesses and services.

Today, Rosebud is a small city with a population of about 390 people. It is still an important agricultural center, with many local farmers growing corn, soybeans, and wheat. The city also has a number of small businesses, including stores, restaurants, and other services. The Rock Island Railroad was instrumental in the growth of Rosebud. The first export of Rosebud via the new railroad was cordwood, which was sent to a brick kiln in St. Louis. Other exports included livestock and produce, as well as passenger service. Several businesses opened in Rosebud in the following years, including a lumber yard, blacksmith shop, two general stores, a hotel, a mill, café, a telephone office, saloon, bank, and garages. Clay mining also became an important aspect of the local economy. One of these businesses was Brinkman's General Store, which was opened in 1900 along Springfield Road (now Highway 50). It contained a wide variety of items, including shoes, groceries, men's hats, seeds, tobacco, and patent drugs. Today, the building that housed Brinkman's General Store is home to Rachel's Rustic Room & Boutique, which specializes in vintage, farmhouse, French, industrial furniture and home decor as well as trendy clothing.

The Bank of Rosebud closed in 1932 during the Great Depression and was never reopened. Other businesses, such as the lumber yard, blacksmith, hotel, mill, telephone office, and general stores, are now memories. However, other businesses have continued to thrive in Rosebud, including Ford dealerships and farm implement stores. The first hotel in Rosebud, the Baur Hotel, was opened in 1899 and was "open for boarders." It was filled to capacity every night, serving the needs of the Rock Island Railroad crews and newcomers following the rails west. The hotel was later torn down and is now a gravel lot available for vendor space.

Rosebud has also become a destination for antique seekers, located on Highway 50, enroute from St. Louis to the Lake of the Ozarks. Travelers can find interesting shops and restaurants along their way. In 2005, businesses started opening as a destination for antique seekers, day trippers, and travelers enroute from St. Louis to Lake of the Ozarks.

In addition to its rich history and thriving local businesses, Rosebud has a number of cultural and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy. The city is home to a number of churches, including the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Methodist Church, both of which were dedicated in the early 20th century. The Immanuel Lutheran Church was dedicated in 1914, while the Methodist Church was dedicated in 1915. Rosebud also has a number of community organizations, including the American Legion Post 587, which was chartered in 1949.
